Vehicles That Don’t Meet ULEZ Standards
Some vehicles don’t meet the emissions criteria set by Transport for London (TFL) for the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). If your vehicle is non-compliant, you’ll need to a daily permit when driving in the zone. This page outlines the types of vehicles that typically fall into this category.

Common Non-Compliant Vehicles
- Older Diesel Cars: Many diesel cars registered before September 2015 fail to meet the Euro 6 standard required for ULEZ compliance. These vehicles are known for emitting high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx).
- Older Petrol Cars: Petrol vehicles that don’t meet Euro 4 emissions standards—generally those registered before 2005—are also considered non-compliant.
- Motorbikes and Mopeds: Two-wheeled vehicles that don’t meet at least the Euro 3 standard may incur charges, despite their size.
- Heavy-Duty Vehicles: Older buses, coaches, and lorries that do not meet Euro VI emissions standards are among the most heavily regulated in the ULEZ.
How to Check Your Vehicle
If you're not sure whether your vehicle meets the ULEZ requirements, you can:
- Check your logbook (V5C) for the Euro emissions rating
- Contact your vehicle manufacturer for emissions data
- Use TFL’s official vehicle checker tool
Upgrading to a compliant vehicle or using alternative transport can help reduce your costs and contribute to cleaner air across London.
